Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to request for a debit card?

You only need to hold a Current and/or Savings account with the bank to request a debit card. If you don’t have one yet, you can open an account and request for a debit card here.

Can I request for more than one debit card?

At the moment, you can only hold one debit card.

What is the difference between the virtual and physical debit card?

The virtual debit card is accessible by logging in to HLB Connect and can be used for online purchases.
The physical debit card will be delivered to your mailing address upon request and can be used for both in-store and online purchases.
The virtual debit card will have the same card number, expiry date and CVV as the physical card.
If you have requested a physical debit card and have not activated it yet, the bank will decline any online purchases with merchants that do not require a SMS one-time password to complete the purchase.

I only have a virtual card, can I request for a physical card?

You can order a physical card through our HLB Connect online banking platform by following the steps below:
  1. Log in to your HLB Connect account here
  2. From the ‘Card Management’ menu, choose ‘Order a Physical Card’
Your physical card will have the same card number, expiry date and CVV as your virtual card. While you wait for your physical card, you can continue using your virtual card for online purchases with 3D-Secure merchants requiring a SMS one-time password to complete the purchase.
You will need to activate your physical card once it arrives to use it for in-store and online purchases.

How do I activate my virtual debit card?

If you have opened your account and requested your card through our online platform with SingPass, then your virtual card will be activated as soon as your card is issued.
Log in to HLB Connect to retrieve your new debit card details to start using it.
Note that if you have requested a physical debit card as well and have not activated it yet, the bank will decline any online purchases with merchants that do not require a SMS one-time password to complete the purchase.

I have just received my physical debit card, how do I activate it?

You can activate your card instantly through any of the following methods:
  1. Log in to your HLB Connect account
    • From the ‘Card Management’ menu, choose ‘Activate Physical Card’
    • Create your 6-digit PIN for overseas ATM withdrawals
  2. SMS Activation
    • SMS: ACT<space>last 4 digits of your card number to +65 8240 0308

What is the Complimentary 6-month Personal Accident Insurance?

The Complimentary 6-month Personal Accident Insurance is underwritten by HL Assurance Pte Ltd (HL Assurance) for new HL Bank Debit Card holders aged 18 to 65 years' old.

Can I use my debit card overseas?

Yes, you can use your debit card for overseas transactions, in-store and online, once it has been activated.
However, for your security, you will need to enable your debit card’s magnetic stripe and ATM withdrawals for overseas usage through our HLB Connect online banking platform by following the steps below:
  1. Log in to your HLB Connect account
  2. From the ‘Card Management’ menu, choose ‘Change Overseas ATM Withdrawal & Magnetic Stripe Settings’
  3. Select ‘Enable’ or ‘Perpetual’ to enable your debit card for overseas usage
  4. If you have not already done so, proceed to set up your 6-digit debit card PIN for overseas ATM withdrawals at ‘Create/Reset PIN’ from the menu
You can also disable your debit card’s magnetic stripe and ATM withdrawals for overseas usage under these settings.

How do I set up or change my 6-digit debit card PIN?

You can reset your 6-digit debit card PIN through our HLB Connect online banking platform by following the steps below:
  1. Log in to your HLB Connect account
  2. From the ‘Card Management’ menu, choose ‘Create/Reset PIN’
  3. Enter your new 6-digit card PIN

I have incorrectly entered my 6-digit debit card PIN more than 3 times, how do I reset my PIN?

You can reset your 6-digit debit card PIN through our HLB Connect online banking platform by following the steps below:
  1. Log in to your HLB Connect account
  2. From the ‘Card Management’ menu, choose ‘Create/Reset PIN’
  3. Enter your new 6-digit card PIN
You will also need to proceed to ‘Freeze/Unfreeze Card’ from the menu to unblock your card after resetting your PIN.

My debit card is lost or stolen, how do I block and replace my card?

If you have lost your debit card or it has been stolen, we recommend you immediately block your card and request a replacement through our HLB Connect online banking platform by following the steps below:
  1. Log in to your HLB Connect account
  2. From the ‘Card Management’ menu, choose ‘Request Card Replacement’
  3. Once you have submitted the request, your old card will be permanently blocked to prevent any fraudulent activity and you will immediately be issued with a new debit card

I have misplaced my debit card, can I temporarily block my card?

Yes you can, we recommend you do this immediately through our HLB Connect online banking platform by following the steps below:
  1. Log in to your HLB Connect account
  2. From the ‘Card Management’ menu, choose ‘Freeze/Unfreeze Card’
  3. Freeze your debit card temporarily and return here to unfreeze your card once you have found it

How do I change the debiting account of my debit card?

Your debit card can only be linked to one default debiting account for all transactions and overseas ATM withdrawals.
You can change your debiting account through our HLB Connect online banking platform by following the steps below:
  1. Log in to your HLB Connect account
  2. From the ‘Card Management’ menu, choose ‘Change Debiting Account’
  3. Select your preferred debiting account from the dropdown list

How do I view and update my spending and overseas ATM withdrawal limit on my debit card?

You can view and update your debit card spending and overseas ATM withdrawal limit through our HLB Connect online banking platform by following the steps below:
  1. Log in to your HLB Connect account
  2. From the ‘Card Management’ menu, choose ‘Change Purchase/Withdrawal Limits’
  3. Your current limits will be displayed and you may enter the new limits you would like to set for your debit card

Can I turn on/off SMS and email notifications for my debit card transactions?

Yes, you can choose to receive SMS and/or email notifications for your debit card transactions. You can also set the amount for transactions above which you would like to receive notifications for.
You can update your notification settings through our HLB Connect online banking platform by following the steps below:
  1. Log in to your HLB Connect account
  2. From the ‘Card Management’ menu, choose ‘Manage Transaction Notifications’
  3. Choose whether you would like to receive SMS and/or email notifications
  4. Enter the minimum transaction amount to be notified

How do I renew my debit card that is about to expire?

Don’t worry about it, your card will be renewed automatically.
You will receive an SMS and email notification from the bank informing you that your debit card has been renewed and can be retrieved by logging in to HLB Connect. If you hold a physical debit card, we will send your debit card to your mailing address with the bank.
Once you receive your new debit card, you will need to activate it before using it.
If you haven’t received your debit card, call our contact centre at +65 6349 8330.

How do I check the transactions performed on my debit card?

You can view your debit card transactions through our HLB Connect online banking platform by following the steps below:
  1. Log in to your HLB Connect account
  2. Select the current or savings account linked to your debit card to view your transaction history

What should I do if I don’t recognise a transaction performed on my debit card?

Please call our contact centre at +65 6349 8330 (24x7) to lodge your dispute.
You will be required to submit a dispute form, available here and a sales draft retrieval fee of SGD 5.35 (inclusive of GST) may be charged.

What are some tips to keep my card secure?

  1. Do's:
    • Make sure that your card is always kept safely
    • Keep an eye on your card during any transactions and ensure that the correct card is returned to you
    • Check your account balances and transactions made regularly and inform the bank if you don’t recognise any transactions
    • Inform the bank when you change your contact numbers or address as we may contact you if we detect any suspicious activities on your card

  2. Don'ts:
    • Lend your card to anyone or leave it lying around
    • Keep card information such as your 6- digit PIN, in the same place as your card
    • Disclose your card details or other personal information to anyone. No one should ask for your password or PIN

    2.8% of the converted transaction amount (for all transactions effected in Singapore dollars and processed overseas)
